You may have heard many of the radio ads recently supporting Harry Reid. They contend that we should thank Harry Reid for standing up and fighting for Nevada. Senator Reid probably even believes that his actions positively represent the people of Nevada. Reid probably sees himself as having the courage to say in public what his peers will only say in private.
This unfounded “belief” wasn’t unique to Senator Reid. This argument was common on college campuses as well. The reason that Reid had to quickly amend his statements is that the argument was cheaply partisan and completely unfounded. (How’s saying the surge was accomplishing nothing explain that the reduction of violence in Iraq barely warrants news coverage anymore?)
Senator Reid is not a moderate. When Senator Reid’s name appears in the media it is almost always immediately preceded or followed by Speaker of the House Pelosi’s name. That the two names can usually be used interchangeably is laughable. The culture of Nevada is not the culture of San Francisco. That the moderate people of Nevada are represented in such a partisan way is abhorrent. Nevada politics is a unique blend of social libertarianism and limited taxation/government that Harry Reid doesn’t understand and fails to represent. Congress desperately needs the ideas and values that we cherish in Nevada but for the last 18 years Senator Reid hasn’t been that voice.
Senator Reid’s representation isn’t the primary reason he must be defeated. In the end, the only thing we demand from our politicians is results. After 18 years the results are in and to manage the magnitude of these failings they must be broken into two categories.
Failing for Nevada:
Nevada has the second highest unemployment rate in the country. Nevada has the worst foreclosure rate in the country. Look at this report card produced by Education Week. Public education in Nevada is failing. Despite Reid’s role as majority leader Nevada has the second worst rate of return on federal tax dollars. Senator Reid cannot solely be blamed for Nevada’s failings on these and so many other issues, but the fact that his leadership has failed to produce results cannot be ignored. With all of this in mind is it any wonder Reid raises less than 10% of his money here in Nevada?
Failing for America:
Senator Reid assumed leadership of the United States Senate January 4, 2007. The Dow industrial average was above 12,000, the dollar was worth .7549 Euros, and the National debt represented 65.9% of our Gross Domestic Product(GDP). During Reid’s leadership we saw the Dow Industrial average drop as far as 7,000. The dollar is currently worth .67 Euros and the National debt is expected to represent more than 90% of our GDP. TARP, the stimulus, the auto bailouts, and out of control spending have done significant damage to the United States economy. The liberal policies of democrats led by Senator Reid have darkened America’s economic future. Senator Reid consistently opposes opposition input and has threatened to use procedural maneuvers to circumvent Senate voting requirements.
